I swear watching politics is like being in an S&M relationship!

Truth be damned in the world of politics. Spin is king. That is all.

The Friday Fix (11/24/2010)

Yeah, I know it’s Wednesday, but who’s gonna be paying attention to this little blog on Friday :P )

Quite simply I just wanted to thank everyone who’s been there for me throughout the year. It’s always been a pleasure to help others find out the best way to get the most out of Zune, Music, Gaming and Community (my four pillars if you will).

Everyone has been supportive of Inside the Circle and, while Zune isn’t exactly a barn burner with news, I’m honored to have such wonderful co-writers who keep things interesting with geeky information that we all can share and take part in.

I’m glad to have a circle of family and friends that support me and always want to keep me on the straight and narrow and looking out for my best interests. It can only mean that 2011 is going to be a great year, a big year and a wonderful year in my life.

Thanks to all of you who quickly took to this second blog that I started. I went into this one thinking that I needed to kinda mouth off about things and Inside the Circle wasn’t the medium for that. I know ITC has those Conversation Piece articles, but I wanted to have a place where I could go more in-depth about other topics that most times aren’t for the Inside the Circle audience. I’m glad that the feedback has been positive and that’s what motivates me to keep putting out things that, I hope are, insightful and spur some conversation (and maybe even debate).

Here’s to a happy Holiday season and to a relaxing and enjoyable 4-day weekend (5-days for those who took the day off today!)

Keep the beat, everyone!

My, my, my isn’t @Zune silent these days!? What’s next?

You take a look at Zune, as a platform, nowadays and you would think that it’s reached  a strong plateau. Think about all of the places you can access music and videos via Zune’s service: Zune HD, Windows Phone 7, XBOX 360, PC Software, United Airlines, Bing Music and the Zune website.

Zune, being everywhere, now gives you this chance to discover new music anywhere you are. It’s been amazing the types of tools that Zune has placed at a  listener’s disposal to find new and exciting sounds to add to their collection, with a couple of the highlights being Mixview and Smart DJ.

A question I posed to a friend a while ago was if Zune had matured as a software and service, in the sense of music discovery. When you already have things like Zune Social for networking, Smart DJ which creates a dynamic playlist, Mixview which allows you to puzzle together how artists are connected and Zune Pass which lets you stream and listen to as much music as you want, what other tools are possible to help you find out what’s new and exciting?

(Oh yeah and let’s not forget playlists, channels and the like…)

I only ask this because I sit down every now and then, look at this software and my Zune HD and I wonder what could possibly be the next step. Everyone keeps harping about a Zune HD 2 or some device that runs Windows Phone 7 bits, but I am just as interested in what could be next from a firmware/software standpoint. With each release of a new music discovery feature, I’ve been able to stumble upon new artists and grow my collection beyond just jazz, which has been a blessing for a music junkie such as myself.

If I know Zune I think they have more up their sleeve and aren’t resting on their laurels. Sure, the launch of Windows Phone 7 is a big deal because now you’ve taken Zune out into the masses, even beyond the walls of the United States. But I have to think that in the laboratories within the Zune space, there’s new things being tested, new ideas being crafted and new discovery methods being programmed, debugged and surveyed.

I can only hope that Zune continues to be the music-discovery machine that it has been for myself and others in the past few years.

Time will only tell (as the saying goes)…

Yes, I saw the AMAs…*sigh*

Don’t get me wrong. There is plenty of music that is available in the Zune Marketplace (current music) that I listen to and enjoy, but after seeing the American Music Awards tonight, I have to still be amazed that people will continue to call the current crop of artists the best music that we have to offer.

It goes back to a question that I asked earlier about music in the future. My mom has great stuff in her past that we all can agree was good classic music: Stevie Wonder, Elvis, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis and more. Tell me anything about the American Music Awards tonight that you’ll be proud to talk about in 30 years.

Now I have to admit, Pink put on an excellent performance but that is pretty much where my enjoyment of the show ended. I was quite snarky (as one of my good friends put it) on Twitter tonight but that’s fundamentally because it pains me that we recognized and honor (let’s face it) crap, when there are some awesome bands out there playing smokey rooms for $25 and a free lunch. We need to find these groups and bring them to the forefront. We need to stop worrying about if the artist will look sexy on the record label and worry about if I’m going to be proud of what they’ve accomplished when we all reach retirement.

I don’t anticipate a Justin Beiber old-man tour. Dude’s singing stuff now before his testicles have fully descended and it’s gonna be interesting what happens when his voice starts to sound a lot more like Usher…with a cold.

Overall this was a very underwhelming show. It should be a wake up call that we’ve have really started taking true talent out of music and just replaced it with sex appeal and autotune.

We need to fix that and STAT!

The Friday Fix (11/19/2010)

Congrats to Microsoft on the opening of their latest MS Store right there in their own backyard. It looks like so far it’s working out really well with these stores. People enjoy the atmosphere, hands-on with the products and getting the chance to see celebs like Major Nelson, Steve Ballmer, Dave Matthews and Miley Cyrus. Looking forward to seeing where other stores pop up.

Once again, I have to commend Ubisoft. The more I used Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, the more I realize that it’s effectively made sure that I’m doing exercises correctly and at the proper pace. I even like that during workouts it gives you a couple of minutes to rehydrate and all of that good stuff. Yeah, I’m fanboying over this game.

A special shoutout to Trixie 360 who performed her final duties with the XBOX 360 team. She’s moving on to a new job and I wish her the best. I still remember when her and Dana were getting married and I picked out an oh-so-awesome wedding gift for those guys. If you know where I work then you can only imagine how cool it was :P )

Zune released some new applications this week. To be perfectly honest, though, as much as I like when new apps are released I don’t see where there was a dire need for an alarm clock or a chord finder. I’m sure someone finds those useful but given that a few apps are released every so often, I would hope that it becomes heavier on games. I want to see more stuff like Project Gotham to be honest with you.

Speaking of Zune, they modified their front page of the website a bit. Nice.

Well guys, I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and rock on!
